Lynette Oxley – end of 16 Days Action Message

by | Dec 10, 2024 | Gender-Based Violence Awareness, GOSA Girls on Fire, Self-Defense, Social Activism, Women’s Empowerment

I want every woman to look in the mirror and see a warrior, not a victim. To redefine how we view ourselves at our core. To recognize our own strength and understand that we can be the architects of change—first within ourselves and then for others in our communities.

As we conclude the 2024 Year of Action, I extend heartfelt thanks to all those who made this journey possible. To Sharmaine Lombard for her invaluable research contributions, and to our sister organizations for their unwavering support. The late Olivia Jasriel and the Jasriel Foundation, Tania Koen from the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation, Jessica Louwrens and Deepashini Naidoo from SA Women Fight Back, Keshna Phoenix from Ribbons of Justice, and the inspiring women of the South African Council for Business Women—you are not just collaborators but cherished friends. Thank you for standing with us.

Each year, these interviews profoundly change me. Some stories shake me to the core, revealing the darkest depths of human cruelty. But just as often, they fill me with awe and hope—watching women rise from unimaginable adversity to not only reclaim their lives but also uplift others. Their courage becomes a beacon of light, their resilience an example for us all.

My husband often asks why I do this work. He says, “If you look into the abyss, the abyss looks back.” And he’s right—every story shared with me leaves a lasting impact. But the reason I continue is simple: I see the immense strength in these women, their ability to endure, to transform, and to inspire. They stand as living proof that no matter how dark the times, there is always light to be found—and shared.

Through their stories, these women not only provide critical insights—red flags, survival tips, and strategies for resilience—but also expose the systemic failures that often let us down. By shedding light on these shortcomings, we take the first steps toward meaningful change.

I also have the privilege of speaking with strong businesswomen who exemplify the “can-do” attitude, serving as role models for others striving to break barriers and succeed.

To every woman who took the time to share her journey with us, your words are a gift of encouragement and hope. Together, we commit to a safe and impactful 365 Days of Action.

To all women, know this: I and my fellow GOSA Girls on Fire stand beside you. If need be, we will carry you on our shoulders.

Thank you. Let’s continue the fight—together, as warriors.
